The Manager, Government Relations is responsible for managing and overseeing activities around assigned legislative and other advocacy priority issues for the Association; representing the organization in communication with Capitol Hill offices and federal agencies; representing APHA in coalitions, meetings and briefings that parallel the advocacy priorities of the Association; managing the Friends of HRSA coalition; managing APHA’s legislative and advocacy website; managing and developing federal grassroots activities, campaigns and trainings; and managing APHA’s Action Board in coordination with the Director of Government Relations. In collaboration with the Director of Government Relations, develops and advocates for APHA’s legislative agenda by representing the association at Capitol Hill meetings, coalition meetings federal agency meetings and briefings. Monitor, influence and respond to congressional, regulatory and judicial activity on public health issues impacting APHA advocacy priorities and members. Lead all activities related to the Friends of HRSA coalition including coordinating coalition activities in support of HRSA topline funding in the Labor-HHS-Education Appropriations bill. Develop letters, legislative updates, regulatory comments and testimony related to the association’s priority advocacy issues. Develop and implements strategies for APHA’s federal grassroots advocacy activities, including: engaging APHA members in advocacy with their members of Congress through the Speak for Health advocacy campaign developing action alerts and other advocacy materials, managing APHA’s web-based advocacy web pages and online action alert page, managing and developing advocacy trainings for APHA’s members and state and regional Affiliates. In collaboration with the Director of Government Relations staff the Action Board, the association’s main advocacy board. Collaborate with the Strategic Communications unit on media advocacy around the associations’ advocacy priorities and critical public health issues. Collaborate with the Director of Government Relations to develop the association’s annual Congressional vote record. Work with the editor of APHA’s monthly newspaper, The Nation’s Health, to provide input and story ideas on congressional and other federal activity on APHA’s priority issues. Manage the government relations internship program. Assist in staffing the annual APHA policy statement development process. Perform other duties as assigned.
Bachelor’s degree required, advanced degree preferred. The incumbent should have 3 to 5 years of experience working in an association government relations department or on Capitol Hill, preferably on health-related issues. Exceptional communications skills, including writing and oral abilities are required. Strong computer skills are required. Previous experience with online advocacy systems highly desired. Applicants should have outstanding interpersonal relationship skills. Travel to the annual meeting is required with other occasional travel possible.
Position is based in downtown DC near several metro stations.
Hours: 35 hours a week, full-time, Mon- Fri. (daytime). Number of openings: 1.
