About the Position
The Director of Advocacy and Government Relations leads external and government relations for the university strategically and intentionally to the benefit of the faculty, staff, and students of San Jose State University.
The Director of Advocacy and Government Relations works collaboratively with the Director of Local and State Relations to develop strategies for cultivating relationships with government officials at all levels, opinion leaders, and community neighbors and partners.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
Collaborate with the Director of Local and State Relations to develop a comprehensive, coordinated overall strategy for community and government relations.
Build and enrich relationships with community partners, opinion leaders in the region, and area neighbors.
Identify issues locally that are mutually important to the community and the university and develop mutually beneficial partnerships.
Identify new opportunities to connect the university’s goals and resources to opinion leaders and the greater community, including serving on various university committees as needed.
Represent San Jose State University on various boards and associations.
Develop and implement community outreach plan including neighborhoods, regional opinion leaders, local governments, and corporate contacts.
Serve as liaison to (a) external stakeholders or (b) between emergency operations teas and senior leadership during campus emergencies and crises.
Build and enrich relationships with federal elected officials and their staff.
Engage directly with elected officials and their staffs to discuss public policy issues and legislation.
Work closely with other university divisions on compliance with federal regulations and legal requirements
Serve as an advisor to the Chief of Staff (COS) and keep her and the President informed of changing public policy and legislative matters.
Prepare executive level presentations, summaries, reports, manuscripts and draft documents.
Coordinate and develop meetings and events with government, community and business partners consistent with other university initiatives and events.
