University Relations works closely with internal and external constituencies of the campus including trustees of the UC Santa Cruz Foundation, the Alumni Council, and members of other key constituencies.
University Relations provides leadership, strategic planning, and central services in the areas of alumni, donor and parent relations and outreach, fundraising, government relations, communications, marketing, media relations, public events and publications (electronic and print), and campus Web development. In addition, University Relations provides support for the UC Santa Cruz Foundation and the UC Santa Cruz Alumni Associations, both separate, not-for-profit corporations in the state of California.
The campus seeks an experienced, highly motivated fundraising professional to serve as Director of Development. Under the direction of the Director of Major Gifts and in consultation with the Divisional Dean, the Director of Development plans strategically, develops, coordinates, and implements a major donor fundraising program to secure and increase philanthropic support from individuals, corporations, and foundations for the academic priorities of the division and campus as determined by the Divisional Dean and the Associate Vice Chancellor, Philanthropy.
The Director's major responsibilities will include managing the university's relationship with current divisional donors and prospective donors who give or are capable of giving at the $100,000 level or above. The Director will prepare a strategic plan to develop and implement all components of a major gifts program with specific emphasis on initiating a plan for divisional development to identify and qualify new prospects for the current comprehensive campaign.
The Director will design and implement comprehensive strategies to identify, cultivate, and steward high and medium capacity individuals, build engagement of these individuals with the division, create gift opportunities based on divisional priorities, formulate and coordinate fundraising strategies, and determine appropriate stewardship plans for significant donors.
The Director will involve the trustees, other high-level volunteers, and academic leaders in connecting these donors to the division to deepen their interest and involvement. The Director will work with the Director of Major Gifts to develop and implement donor strategy. The Director will supervise development staff, which could include Associate and/or Assistant Directors of Development and the Development Administrative Assistant.

Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Five or more years of progressively responsible experience in the design and implementation of complex development programs, emphasizing the identification, cultivation and securing of major philanthropic commitments from individuals, corporations, and foundations.
Demonstrated experience in the personal solicitation of major gifts from individuals.
Knowledge of the full spectrum of development practice, principles and activities, including gift policies, solicitations, stewardship, donor recognition, administration, working with high-level volunteer committees, and the ability to apply this knowledge creatively to specific fund-raising projects.
Excellent interpersonal skills to work effectively with the Dean, faculty, administrators, community leaders, volunteers, donors, and other staff including people of differing temperaments, socioeconomic backgrounds and political/ethical philosophies.
