The Office of External Affairs brings together units responsible for influencing public policy and opinion, communicating about the university priorities, challenges and achievements and strengthening the university's reputation and the perceptions people hold of it. Units include the offices responsible for government and community relations at the federal, state, regional and Spokane/Eastern Washington levels, television production and radio and an executive and administrative staff.We have an outstanding opportunity for an Assistant Director to work closely with the vice president and the government relations directors to coordinate high-level events and tours on behalf of the university and to communicate via electronic and other media about the work of the Office of External Affairs. The position acts as a logistics, research and communications resource for the vice president and other department directors.Duties & Responsibilities:45% Event Coordination -- Coordinate events, campus visits and briefings for elected officials and other external constituencies; serve as External Affairs liaison to outside groups and other campus units and departments. Cultivate and nurture relationships critical to the University's ability to achieve its objectives.40% Communications -- Manages main External Relation webpage and curates and develops content for the External Affairs website; Conceptualizes, directs and develops written content for the quarterly department newsletter and other electronic communication; Manages External Affairs social media channels and guides team members in best practices for social media posts and supports units within External Affairs with assistance with social media posting; Provides substantial written contributions to reports and publications produced by the Office of External affairs; drafts comments, and provides research and writing for white papers, presentations and other communications documents.5% Customer Relationship Management system -- Manages CRM system (Microsoft Dynamics), including serving as administrative manager for technical support (passcodes and access); arranges training and manages contractor relationship for trainings and customization of system.10% Special Projects -- Assist with policy analysis and research; serve as department liaison and representative on internal committees and to external stakeholders; other duties and projects as assigned.Requirements include:Bachelor's degree in political science, public administration, communications or relevant field plus a minimum of 4-5 years' experience in government, government relations or a university environment. Must have a general understanding of the local, state and federal legislative and regulatory process, as well as knowledge of Washington state's geography and public policy issues. Experience with event coordination and logistics.Experience with project management.Knowledge of electronic forms of communication, including social media and online publishing, excellent written, verbal and communications skills are required. Understanding of higher education policy and knowledge of issues affecting academic research, higher education funding and/or public universities. Ability to work under pressure of deadlines with little or no support.
