Identifies new donor prospects through researching background information on potential donors and developing materials, marketing plans, and organizing related programs/events; cultivates, stewards, and may solicit donor prospects.
Under supervision of the Director of Prospect Management and Research (PMR), the Prospect Research Specialist is an integral member of the Philanthropy fundraising team, housed within the University Development unit.
This part-time position provides an excellent opportunity for applicants with an interest in the prospect management and research sector to gain hands-on experience and to acquire an understanding of how to identify and secure funding in support of University campaign goals and initiatives. The position provides an opportunity to learn from seasoned Development professionals in a collegial and supportive environment.
In this role, the Prospect Research Specialist is responsible for identifying, researching, and analyzing information obtained from internal and external resources. Individuals who are identified to have an affinity and propensity to provide major philanthropic support to the University are recommended to the Prospect Management and Research team for further discovery and qualification assignments.
The ideal candidate is a curious, detail-oriented individual with analytical skills who enjoys working in a team environment and is comfortable with databases and manipulating data.
This position will also be responsible to initiate and reconcile unit purchases and payments in regards to vendors and a variety of ongoing annual expenses; electronic and hard copy filing of completed prospect research products such as bios and profiles; and report generation and data base updating, as required.
Situated on 2,000 spectacular acres among the redwoods and overlooking the beautiful Monterey Bay, the UC Santa Cruz campus serves nearly 18,000 undergraduate and graduate students. The campus is located just 30 miles from San Jose, the southern hub of Silicon Valley.
University Relations (UR) builds enduring relationships, resources, and understanding that enable UC Santa Cruz to provide educational opportunities, create knowledge, and transform lives. UR works closely with internal and external constituencies of the campus including trustees of the UC Santa Cruz Foundation, the Alumni Council, and members of other key constituencies.
University Relations provides leadership, strategic planning, and central services in the areas of alumni, donor and parent relations and outreach, fundraising, government relations, communications, marketing, media relations, public events and publications (electronic and print), and campus Web development. In addition, University Relations provides support for the UC Santa Cruz Foundation and the UCSC Alumni Associations, both separate, not-for-profit corporations in the state of California.
The University Development unit at UC Santa Cruz is responsible for fostering and strengthening the campus outreach efforts to UC Santa Cruz constituents and for garnering funding in the support of a variety of UC Santa Cruz fundraising initiatives and the campus' current $300M campaign.
Work-site location is the UC Santa Cruz Scotts Valley Center (100 Enterprise Way, Scotts Valley, CA).
- Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
- Ability to recall, recognize, and communicate interrelated information pertaining to University benefactors.
- Ability to use prospect research technologies and databases.
- Ability to be resourceful when tracking down relevant information to inform staff fundraising strategies.
- Ability to conceptualize, develop, and implement proactive prospecting methodologies to identify potential major gift prospects.
