The University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB), Institute of Human Virology (IHV) is currently recruiting for a Director of Public Relations. The Director of Public Relations responsible for a number of functions including but not limited to public relations, news media relations, corporate relations, government relations, and special event planning for a school or institute and spin-off organizations such as the Global Virus Network, IHV-Nigeria and Profectus Biosciences Inc, among others. In consultation with Director, strategizes, develops and implements programs, communications, and events that provide positive image of liaison to high-level state and federal officials and internationally renowned individuals including prominent foreign officials, celebrities, prominent scientists, etc. and provides counsel on issues relating to government policy, crisis communications, reputation management.

Provide leadership to and execute public relations and media relations strategies, support new IHV Development program and all IHV related PR communications to increase familiarity with and support for the school or institute's mission and programs.
Confer with senior leadership of the school/institute to plan public relations strategy and objectives for the short and mid-term future. Sustain relationships within the University, System and/or state government that allows the incumbent of the Dean/Director to advance the image, programs, and mission of the school/institute.
Manage publication of biannual Discovery Newsletter and Annual Report. Manage IHV website and update content in coordination with the School's web team. Create and manage social media messaging and tools. Draft and manage all IHV and GVN PR communications. Manage redesign initiative of collateral materials.
Provides research and advice to the Director regarding sensitive issues that rise to the level of the Governor and high-level Federal and international government officials. Communicate to the Governor and high-level government officials as appropriate.
Proactively represents the department through participation in campus meetings and special projects, as well as UMB on an external basis with USM headquarters and other system-wide units.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Education: Bachelors in Marketing, Public Relations or related field.
Experience: Seven (7) years of experience in marketing, public relations, communications, or media, public, or client relations.
Supervisory: Three (3) years of experience at a management/leadership level.
